How can you tell if you're on track to hit your goals?

Whatever goals you're working on right now, whether you're a student in my Language Semester program and working toward your next level of fluency, or you've set goals for yourself in 2021 (maybe you participated in my story-writing, vision-making workshop in January!), or you've got some other longer- or shorter-term goals in mind, are you on track to hit them?

We often struggle to evaluate our own progress, either because we don't have a good way of measuring non-physical goals, or because we are incredibly biased by our own role as the primary participant!

So today I want to offer you a way to self-audit your progress toward any goal. (Psst...this is the same survey I'm using as I meet with individual language students to check in on their progress this semester! It really works!)

I've got a special gift for you at the end, too.

First: review what your goal was. What is it that you're working toward? When did you want to get there? Oftentimes we feel like we're missing the mark because we're not doing perfectly, when perfect was never the goal. Check back in with your actual goal(s), and then ask yourself: how do I feel about my progress toward this goal so far?

Oftentimes we feel like we're missing the mark because we're not doing perfectly, when perfect was never the goal.

Second, reflect on what's working well in your approach so far, followed by what's not working well. It's important that you separate these two and start with the positive, because our human brains are natural problem-solvers, meaning they like to go straight for the negative and create all kinds of worst-case scenarios ("I'm never going to hit my goal because this keeps happening.")

Third, create (or modify!) your strategy moving forward based on your responses above! If you're one of my semester students, we've already put a strategy in place using small, weekly goals that add up to overall success in our five-month language semester. It's wise to start with a strategy, but it's even wiser to tweak it appropriately as you move along! What's getting you the best results so far? How can you amplify or create more of that? What's really been hindering you? How can you minimize, negate, or work around that?

Finally, it's time for the secret sauce: aligning your energetic self (or your feelings) with the outcome you desire. Imagine yourself having hit your goal. How are you going to feel after you accomplish it? What two adjectives best describe what you're feeling know that you've reached your goal?

Take those feelings with you and use them as guides on your journey. As you keep progressing toward your goal, ask yourself on a regular basis (this might be daily for short-term goals, or weekly for longer ones!): Do I feel (adjective #1) and (adjective #2) about my progress? If the answer is no, what do I need to do to create those feelings?

Along with helping align your actions to your desired energetic outcome, experiencing those triumphant feelings now while you're still working toward your goal will allow you to feel your accomplishment to it's FULLEST when you get there!

Make sure you're on track to your real goals, mis amigos, and take time to self-survey this week.
