Do you just need to try harder?

What kind of support do you need?

What kind of support do you need?

Are you trying too hard?

We use this phrase in English, s/he is trying too hard, as a criticism. It's meant to imply that whatever it is you're trying to accomplish will only come if you relax and let it come more naturally. Don't force it.

And yet so many times when we're not getting the results that we want, we tell ourselves to just try harder.

Does your self-talk sound anything like this?

C'mon, self!

What was that? I know you can do better than that!

Of course you're not seeing the results you want. You're not putting in enough time/practice/effort!

C'mon, you just need to get through this! Give it a little more! A little more!

I'm not saying not to try for the things you want, mi amigo. It does take effort, and a good coach, trainer, or role model will help you get even further than you thought you could on your own.

But that's just the point of working with a coach, trainer, or mentor: you're not actually meant to do it all on your own.

Instead of telling yourself to just try harder, ask yourself:

How could I give myself more support?
¿Cómo puedo darme más apoyo?

Where can you ask for support? Where can you find it? How can you give it to yourself?

Professional support, personal support, community support, supernatural support...it takes a village. It's supposed to take a village. You, me, we were not created to get through life on our own.

If you're not reaching your goal, it's not that you're not trying hard enough. I invite you to spend 25 minutes in conversation with me in my latest episode of #SpanishSaturday, my weekly life & language coaching series, to let go of the struggle and embrace the question: How can I give myself more support?

It is safe to take this time for yourself. It is safe to drop the struggle. It is safe to seek help. You are supported; you are loved. You don't need to do this alone.
